The results of modern biology have led to profound insights into the origin and evolution of life. Living matter is no longer to be regarded as the consequence of mysterious and immaterial forces, but as the result of a gigantic process of self–organization of matter, in the course of which living beings originated step by step from a molecular chaos. Although the historical root of this process is unique, the overall process underlies the general principles of natural laws. A more exact analysis shows that the principles already known are rich enough to generate the entire diversity and complexity of living phenomena.
